The NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Associated Industrial Services Occupations – Passive Fire Protection (QCF) is designed for experienced fire-stoppers that have been doing the job for a while but require a formal qualification to recognize their skills and knowledge.

It incorporates firestopping duties and methods of intumescent application; it also has a number of specific modules, relating to typical passive fire activities.

You will need to demonstrate practical skills in relevant areas, to prove you have the ability to carry out your work safely and to a good standard. You will also need to show understanding and awareness, to prove you have a good level of work-related knowledge and understanding.

This NVQ provides the opportunity for fire-stoppers in the construction industry to demonstrate their competence and boost their careers. If you’re working as a Fire Stopper, then this is the qualification for you. Our assessors are IFE registered fire engineers and assess this NVQ to a high technical standard using a variety of authentic assessment methods.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements. However, you must demonstrate to us that you have the experience, skills, knowledge and capacity to achieve this qualification through our internal assessment process.

Qualification Structure

Mandatory Units:

Confirming to General Safety in the Workplace

Conforming to productive working practices in the workplace

Moving, Handling and Storing Resources in the Workplace

Erecting and dismantling access/working platforms in the workplace

Plus two optional units from below:

Installing dry cladding in the workplace

Applying intumescent coatings in the workplace

Installing fire resisting ductwork systems in the workplace

Installing fire stopping in the workplace

Installing cavity barriers in the workplace

Erecting fire resisting walls and linings in the workplace

Erecting fire resisting ceiling systems in the workplace

Applying non-reactive spray coatings in the workplace

Installing fire resisting timber doorsets in the workplace


Your assessor will visit you, on site, to collect evidence relating to the qualification being undertaken. Using methods such as observation (watching) and discussion, the assessor will work with you to gather what’s required for your portfolio – these methods of assessment are often recorded electronically.


The timescale between your initial induction for the course and completion varies. However, 2-4 months is a realistic time – although this can be longer or even shorter, depending on the candidate’s ability and availability.

The standard cost of this Level 2 NVQ is £625. Grant money can be claimed back at completion by companies registered with CITB.
